The Super Mario series has been a staple to the Nintendo franchise ever since they released Mario’s first arcade game. Enter Donkey Kong, Jumpman’s first appearance in any game. Jumpman’s first power up was the “Hammer”. I know it’s a weapon but it’s counted as a power up. Anyway, this top 10 is based on the power ups through the whole series, UP TO New Super Mario Bros Wii U. That updated.
Runner Up:
Frog Suit – SMB3 | NES
For the Runner-up of this list, The Frog Suit. You heard me, FROG SUIT! The Frog suit has been made fun of and ignored way too much. The Frog suit is one of the most useful forms in SMB3. It allows Mario and Luigi to swim faster and jump even higher. How would one not like this suit?
Number 10:
Boo Mushroom – Super Mario Galaxy | Wii
This was the first time I’ve ever played as a boo. It was really interesting that Mario or Luigi become boos. Well, I think this deserves number 10 because of its creativity and awesomeness. Mario and Luigi when turned to boos, they can hover and become transparent. Works REALLY well with sneaking.
Number 9:
Metal Cap – Super Mario 64 | Nintendo 64
The Metal Cap defined Mario’s defense as it was REALLY heavy in water and you could barely jump. Invulnerability is in there but, what is strength without speed? I fancy this power up due to the fact that it’s a powerful form.
Number 8:
Wariozilla – Wario: Master of Disguise | DS
DAMN! Excuse me but this is an AWESOME power-up, considering that it’s Wario and a dragon fused as one! I’ve play W:MoD and this was one of the best power-ups it had. Fire EVERYWHERE! EVEN Underwater. Nintendo logic, we love you.
Number 7:
Boomerang Flower – Super Mario 3D Land | 3DS
Okay, this is weird for me to say but, it’s not BETTER than Wariozilla, it’s more…Useful. I know, it’s weird of me but I like Wario’s form better than this weird flower. You can shoot a boomerang that can collect coins, hit multiple enemies and when you jump over it, it continues past you. Useful, but I don’t really like it better than the Wariozilla.
Number 6:
Statue Leaf – Super Mario 3D Land | 3DS
It’s exactly how the Tanooki suit is supposed to be. You could float in the air for a certain period of time or movement, you could check outside for anything. The new addition to this suit is the scarf, it works for Luigi better than Mario, I mean, come on. Haters gonna Hate. You can rear-stomp to turn into a statue that way.
Number 5:
Propeller Block – Super Mario 3D Land | 3DS
This is an actually cool power-up! Well…item? This item allows you to…fly up high and hover. This could be your 1-Up maker if you are THAT good. Also, when you’re done with it in the end of the stage and get the flagpole, you get a free 1-Up out of it. Now THAT’S a power-up.
Number 4:
Ice Flower – Super Mario Galaxy | Wii
Blue Flower, Ice Flower, why are you awesome!? This is one of the best power-ups in the series! Seriously! You can freeze your enemies, skate atop the water creating panels instantly in front of you, in which lets you make panels as well, you can wall jump parallel waterfalls with the panels and the Mario model as Ice Mario is beautiful. Unlike New Super Mario Bros. Wii, that one is just frozen fireballs and makes ice blocks out of your enemies. Meh.
Number 3:
Cloud Flower – Super Mario Galaxy 2 | Wii
Three clouds follow you around while you look really fluffy, what do you do? Cloud platforms! Super Mario Galaxy 2 gives you the fluffiest power-up so you can save from high falls! Well… more like the farthest falls.
Number 2:
Starman – Super Mario Brothers | NES
What do you expect, it’s the Starman. It’s the most invincible power-up known to videogames. Once you grab the Starman, there’s nothing stopping you. Once you plow through any enemy, you get the floating points stacking up to 1000. 1-Up. 1-Up. 1-Up. 1-Up. 1-Up. 1-Up. Oh, sorry. I just plowed through 6 more enemies.
Alright, since we’ve done the whole top 10 just now, I would like to recap the previous 10. Here we go!

Super Mushroom – All Games | All consoles
I don’t know if you guys expected this or not but this is my favorite power-up. Why? It saves your life COUNTLESS times. Imagine you fell on a Koopa and hit the shell, and then it comes at you. What do you even do? You either jump again or get hit. But what if there was no room? You take the hit! How would you even survive? You’re already powered-up with the mushroom and it goes through you, turning you into regular tiny Mario. It saved your life AND taught you a lesson.
